Q. How long have you been a Naturopathic Doctor, and what made you choose this career?
A. I’ve been a Naturopathic Doctor for two fantastic years. I discovered my passion through a series of unexplained decisions, experiences and instinct followed by a calculated leap of faith, and much to my relief, this particular decision felt like a missing puzzle piece in my life. At the time of my choice, I knew I felt invigorated when I was given the opportunity to help people. I knew I had a fascination for the intricacies of the human body. I knew I had a knack for detective work and solving difficult puzzles. And now I find myself practicing Naturopathic medicine!
Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?
A. I am privileged as a Naturopathic Doctor to be able to spend time with each of my patients, to listen and address all of their concerns, and to be in a position where I can spend time deciphering how symptoms experienced are related to a root cause. This allows me to treat rather than to palliate. I find the most rewarding experience to be when I have worked with a patient battling a chronic condition. After a long journey of healing together, we reach a point of health that was not deemed achievable. To this day, these moments bring tears to my eyes.
Q. Why is your field important?
A. Where do I start? The CDC provides a conservative analysis of approximately 40% of annual deaths from the top 5 leading causes of death as preventable. Rates of disease are sky-rocketing and affecting people at younger ages. Naturopathic Medicine is a profession that is most equipped in providing evidence-based preventative medicine to the world and as a result, absolutely pivotal to addressing these disturbing trends head-on. Our approach serves to re-establish health by treating the root cause and ultimately unravel the tangles of symptoms many people find themselves overwhelmingly caught in. Naturopathic medicine serves as the catalyst for people to achieve their highest quality of life no matter the state of their health. If that isn’t important enough, I don’t know what is!
Q. What is something surprising about yourself?
A. My health is not perfect. As a Naturopathic Doctor people generally expect I should exude the essence of health 365 days of the year….I wish! I, myself, am also on my own healing journey, I am human and decadent sweets with brewed coffee is my Achilles heel.
Q. What do you like to do outside of your work at the Toronto Wellness Centre?
A. Without doubt, I have an addiction to travelling and exploring the world – anything from a new beach on Toronto island, to gazing at the pyramids in Egypt. Most of all the magic happens in the moments and memories created during these expeditions whether short or long…. sends chills down my spine even thinking about it!
Q. What is something that you wish everyone knew about their health/wellness?
A. Every 27 days your skin regenerates itself. Your stomach lining every 4 days – your liver about 30 days… your body makes these new cells from the food you eat, affected by the environment you foster within. What you eat and how you choose to live literally becomes you. You have a choice in what you are made of. Most people don’t realize how great they are designed to feel!
