Vitamin B12 Q&A with Dr. Kate
Q: Could I have a vitamin B12 deficiency?
A: While not all encompassing, here is a list of a few of the most common symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency:
- Pins and needles or burning sensation in the fingers/toes
- Hearing difficulties
- Impaired memory functions
- Depression and anxiety
- Decreased Energy, Fatigue
- Lowered immune system
Q: Can I find enough B12 in food?
A: Significant amounts of vitamin B12 are only found in animal sources. Strict vegetarians and vegans are advised to supplement with vitamin B12 in order to obtain adequate amounts. It takes 3-5 years for the body to exhaust stores and become overtly B12 deficient if choosing to consume a vitamin B12 deficient diet – but I would highly recommend not letting your body get to that point! Some examples of Vitamin B12 rich foods are: beef liver, kidney, clams, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, and milk.
Q: What conditions can Vitamin B12 shots help with?
A: There are many conditions shown to improve with vitamin B12 supplementation, which is why I am so excited to be able to offer it to my patients! Here are a few:
- Megaloblastic and Pernicious Anemia
- Stress, anxiety and depression
- Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
- Chronic fatigue
- Neuralgia: Sciatica, Trigeminal neuralgia, Shingles (herpes zoster)
- Sulphite sensitive asthma
- DNA and Epigenetic function
- Autism spectrum and ADHD
Q: What risks are involved with taking a Vitamin B12 shot?
A: Very few! Since it is water soluble, vitamin B12 is non-toxic. In the case of excess dosing, this means that it will be excreted in the urine. Rarely one might see a worsening of acne symptoms (acneiform exanthema) however this can resolve after a week of discontinuation of supplementation. Symptoms of being nervous and excitable after injections have been reported especially in patients who are very sensitive or experience chronic fatigue and/or fibromyalgia; however this is easily prevented by decreasing the dose of vitamin B12.
Q: What else should I know before getting my vitamin B12 shot at the Toronto Wellness Centre?
A: It is important to note that as a Naturopathic Doctor, I will provide each of my patients with individualized treatment and advice. In the case of vitamin B12 supplements, this means that I will advise dosing frequency and expectations of results. Often vitamin B12 requires other nutrients for the most therapeutic benefit depending on each multifactorial disease process.
